Creating a website from scratch can feel like a daunting task. Since I am not the most tech-savvy person, I decided to create my website and team up with Ellen to write a blog series detailing the steps that are necessary to make a website.

We thought it would be a good idea to write this blog series to help others who are going to do the same, with little to no experience. We will steer clear of the technical jargon and hopefully make sense of it all using laymen’s terms. We are hoping this blog series will make the process feel more streamlined, organised, and fun for those who are about to do the same. We decided to start with the topic:

“Why even make a website in the first place?”

It’s year 2019, and technology has certainly made its mark in the world – in my eyes making the world a smaller place. The internet makes it easier to connect to people all over the world, so it’s easier than ever to share ideas, send and receive support, and keep in touch with friends, colleagues, and loved ones in faraway places.

Social Media has come a long way since AOL online, MySpace, etc., where some businesses mainly and sometimes solely rely on social media outlets for marketing. Although social media is immensely helpful with connecting people and getting the good word out there, having a website you can call your own has many benefits.

If you have a business (large or small), most would argue that having a website is a necessity. Depending on what kind of business or work you do, the website detail can be varied, from very simple with not much content, to something more complex with a shop and/or booking system. Regardless of the content, you are getting your name out there and making yourself known and available.

You don’t necessarily need to own a business to have a website either. Blogs have become extremely popular in the last 20 years or so. With many blogs becoming so popular that they eventually turn into businesses for people. Food blogs, DIY blogs, health/wellbeing blogs, you name it  – there is something out there in the web that can provide insight and information on anything and everything!

Having your own website gives you the power to communicate your ideas with no boundaries. If you don’t own your own business or maybe you’re not into blogging, personal websites are not only powerful tools to share your ideas, but can also help you stand out from the crowd. When applying for jobs, giving your potential employer your website with information about yourself including your credentials, bio, etc. and give yourself an edge in the job selection process.

Even if you think you don’t have the ability to create your own website, there is so much information and guidance out there to help. We will continue to talk about what steps you need to take in this blog series to guide you through the process. Most importantly, enjoy learning something new, embrace your creativity, and become inspired.

Feel free to comment and let us know if you’re starting to build a website and why, we would love to hear from you :)
